A portable car lift is a great starting point if you need flexibility — you can reposition it and store it when not in use, making it ideal for home garages with limited space. A two post lift is a permanent installation that gives you full vehicle access from both sides, which is ideal if you're working on multiple vehicles or doing more involved mechanical work. Think about how often you'll use it and what kind of access you need underneath the vehicle.
Most of our car lifts, including the portable 5,000 lb model, run on a standard 120V power unit, so you won't need to rewire your garage. For two post lifts, a reinforced concrete floor is strongly recommended to handle the load safely — most residential garage slabs work well, but it's worth checking the thickness and condition of your floor before installation. It depends on the lift and the vehicle you're working on. Our portable lift reaches up to 25.6 inches of max height, while the two post lift extends to 167 inches total — that's the post height, not just the lift travel. A good rule of thumb is to measure your ceiling height, account for the vehicle's roofline, and leave some working clearance on top. Standard two-car garages with 9 to 10-foot ceilings are typically compatible with most of our lift models.
